Advantages of Thrifting

There’s a high chance you’ve gone to a thrift store at least once. Thrifting has many advantages and thrift stores offer a variety of items. Whether you’re looking for clothes, furniture, or accessories..thrift stores will probably have it.

Reduces Waste:

Thrifting is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint and help lower the effects of fast fashion. Manufacturing and shipping clothes produce a lot of waste. In the United States, 80 pounds per capita of used clothing are disposed of; you can donate your clothes instead of throwing them away to lower the number of clothes in the landfill. Thrift stores don’t have to manufacture clothing, and the old clothes are given a new life instead of being wasted.

Create a Unique Wardrobe:

There are many fashion trends right now, but who wants to look like everyone else? Thrifting allows you to create an individual sense of style. If you shop at a traditional retail store, you’re bound to run into someone with the same outfit. However, when you buy from a thrift store, you’re less likely to wear something someone else owns.

High Quality at a Low Price:

Who doesn’t like to save money? It’s no surprise that thrift stores are less expensive than traditional retail stores. Thrifting is like a treasure hunt, and you can find high-quality pieces at a low price. Many designer pieces end up at thrift stores. You may find a $100 shirt for $5. Clothes, furniture, shoes, books, or games in thrift stores go for a fraction of their original cost.

Variety:

Thrifting allows you to see a wide variety of items; they are constantly getting new merchandise in, resulting in new pieces every time you go in. A diverse selection of items is available, so there is a high probability of finding something you like.

The Thrill of the Hunt:

As mentioned earlier, thrifting is like a treasure hunt; you never know what you’ll find. Finding a gem among racks of clothing is exciting and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

DIY/Upcycling:

There are a variety of items at a thrift store that can be turned into something unique. Items range from furniture to décor to the fabric. There is no shortage of thrift store finds that are ready to be upcycled into something new that no one else owns. Most pieces of furniture often only need a fresh coat of paint or a few touch-ups to become a great piece of interior/exterior furniture, giving your home a unique touch. Or, an oversized shirt could be turned into a two-piece set to add to your wardrobe.

Charity:

Some thrift stores are associated with a charity. Therefore, you can shop sustainability and help a good cause. The causes range from providing job training, helping homeless individuals, funding medical research, and many more. Providence, Goodwill and Salvation Army are good examples of thrift stores that work with charity.

Next time you find yourself wanting a new item for your home or wardrobe, consider going to check out a thrift store before heading to the mall. It would save you money and help you take a small step towards sustainability.
