5 Sustainable Cleaning Brands

Updated: Apr 16, 2022

Cleaning is a necessary part of everyone’s daily life and must be done whether you want to or not. The cleaning products you use may have a big impact on the environment. Solutions like disinfecting sprays and soaps are largely composed of water, causing these products to be heavy and hard to ship efficiently. Excessive packaging is another contributing factor, as are harmful chemicals that can end up in the water supply or your body. If you’re interested in a more DIY approach to cleaning, click here. Here at Glass Planet, we wanted to find the best all-natural and eco-friendly cleaning products on the market that will have your house looking sparkling clean without damaging the environment.

What to look for:

  • Not containing toxic chemicals

  • Has biodegradable ingredients

  • Being made from plants

  • Not using single-use plastic

  • Being entirely plastic-free

  • Being refillable

  • Not creating waste

  • Being vegan and/or cruelty-free

  • Recyclable packaging

1. Dropps

This brand is most well known for its laundry detergent pods, which they were the first to do. Instead of using a jug of detergent, these pods dissolve in the wash. In 2017, Dropps was the EPA Safer Choice Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

2. Frosch

Frosch is best known for its natural cleaning spray. Their packaging and bottles are made from 100% recycled materials. They are EU Eco-label Certified which is a label of environmental excellence that is awarded to products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their life cycle. All of their products are vegan and cruelty-free. Their formulas are dermatologically tested and free of harmful chemicals such as Phosphate, Borate, Formaldehyde, NTA, EDTA, and halogen organic compounds.

3. Clean Cult

They use a refillable model to reduce single-use plastics; the refills come in a carton similar to milk or juice. Their products are naturally fragranced with essential oils; they’re incredibly transparent with their ingredients. The shipping of the products is carbon-neutral through a partnership with carbonfund.org. Clean Cut was one of the first zero-waste options to offer refillable bottles. All of their products are cruelty-free and they’re leaping bunny certified.

4. Blueland

Blueland uses a refillable model where you add the water to the products at home. The products come in a tablet form in recyclable packaging. The consumer can drop the tablet in water, and after it dissolves, the spray is ready to be used. The number one ingredient in a lot of our cleaning products is water; these products can be pretty heavy and create more emissions when transported. Therefore, the Blueland tablets are a more efficient type of cleaning product. They are also a woman-owned business whose products are vegan and leaping bunny-certified/cruelty-free. They also have certifications for USDA Biobased Preferred and EPA Safer Choice.

5. Seventh Generation

They’re a certified B Corporation, Rainforest Alliance Certified, FSC Certified, USDA Certified Bio-Based Product, and more. Seventh Generation products do not contain any animal ingredients or byproducts, but they are not vegan certified. They do not test on animals and are Leaping Bunny certified. They are most well known for their laundry detergent.
