Natural Zero Waste Cleaning Swaps

Updated: Apr 1, 2022

Cleaning products are essential; however, we do not talk about their environmental impact. Many conventional cleaners contain harsh chemicals which cause health problems for people and the environment while also generating plastic waste. Fortunately, there are some affordable natural zero waste cleaning swaps that you can use to clean your house without harsh chemicals.

Dishcloths:

  • An old rag or T-shirt can be used to replace a single paper towel.

  • Instead of throwing out an old sock repurpose it into a dishcloth.

White Vinegar:

  • Can be used as a substitute for many cleaning products (make sure to dilute the vinegar with some water for the best results)

  • Pour the mixture into a spray bottle (use a glass/metal spray bottle unless you're using an old one).

  • Properly clean the used spray bottles before adding the vinegar mixture to them.

  • Store the vinegar solution away from direct sunlight.

  • Do not worry, the vinegar smell won't stick around on surfaces.

Baking Soda:

  • If white vinegar doesn’t cut through grease or grime, baking soda is the next best option.

  • Can be used in a variety of ways from cleaning the toilet, scrubbing the oven, to removing stains from fabrics

  • Adding baking soda to your white vinegar mixture will allow you to get a deep clean.

Lemon:

  • Lemons are great for the kitchen; however, they can also be used as a natural cleaning alternative.

  • Many of their benefits are similar tovinegar, without the distinct vinegar smell.

  • Similar to vinegar, lemons must be diluted with water for the best cleaning outcome.

  • Can be used to get rid of hard water marks in the shower and used on other bathroom surfaces

  • To remove water marks on your shower door, cut a lemon in half and rub it on the marks, then wash off with water.

Essential Oils:

  • Many conventional cleaners use artificial fragrances; essential oils are a great natural alternarive to add fragrance to your home.

  • Can be added to cleaning solutions or used in a diffuser

  • If you have pets, make sure to use essential oils that are pet safe.

  • There is a variety of scents to choose from and each of them has different properties.

  • Essential oils of eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, and any citrus fruit are also great for cleaning and killing bacteria.
